Enforced Disappearance and State-Ordered Murder of Young Yarsani Artist

K.M.M.K

According to reports, Arian Azizi, a 19-year-old artist from Qasr-e Shirin and a follower of the Yarsan faith, was forcibly disappeared and later murdered by Iranian intelligence forces in the city.

On the night of January 10, 2025, Arian Azizi was taken by security agencies in Qasr-e Shirin. A few days ago, his family was handed his body by the city’s Criminal Investigation Department.

Following his disappearance, Azizi’s family and relatives repeatedly approached police stations, security agencies, and the court, searching the entire region. However, their efforts were met with contradictory responses from the Intelligence Department, leaving them without answers.

Arian Azizi was widely loved in his city for playing the tanbur, performing traditional Kurdish music, and engaging in cultural activities. On social media, he consistently voiced his protest against the violation of Kurdish people’s political and social rights. Due to the impact of his posts and stories, he came under surveillance by security agencies, received multiple threats, had his Instagram account shut down, and was accused of ties to Kurdish political parties.

The popularity of community leaders and dissident artists—and their role in increasing public activism and awareness of systematic human rights violations in eastern Kurdistan—has long been a source of concern for ruling regimes. In response, authorities have consistently sought to silence such influential figures through physical elimination.
