On Thursday, February 6, 2025, the Kurdistan Human Rights Association (KMMK) reported that Iran’s Supreme Court has rejected the appeal for a retrial of Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner. This decision significantly increases the risk of her imminent execution.
According to KMMK, Amir Raeesian, Azizi’s lawyer, confirmed that the Supreme Court’s Ninth Branch rejected the retrial request. The ruling was issued on January 26, 2025, and was officially communicated to the lawyer on February 5, 2025.
With the appeal denied, Pakhshan Azizi now faces a serious and immediate risk of execution. KMMK has expressed deep concern over this development and has urged the international community to intervene urgently to prevent her execution and secure the release of Azizi and other Kurdish political prisoners in Iran.
Azizi, a social worker and women’s rights activist, has been sentenced to death on charges of “rebellion” and “membership in opposition groups.” She was tried in Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, and her death sentence has been upheld by the Supreme Court.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Association is calling on international human rights organizations and world governments to pressure the Iranian authorities to halt Azizi’s execution and prevent further political executions.
