KMMK congratulates 8th of March, the International Women’s Day, to all the women around the world, and especially to the Kurdish women, and commemorate women’s struggle for freedom and equality.
Women in eastern Kurdistan and Iran over the past year have faced many brutalities and oppression by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Many political, civil, and human rights activists have been imprisoned and tortured in Iran. During the recent protests against the Islamic Republic of Iran, women were actively present at the forefront and several of them have been killed and dozens have been arrested.
Zainab Jalalian, an iconic symbol of eastern Kurdistan’s activist women, remains in prison having to endure constant harsh and unjust conditions. Several other Kurdish activist women have also been arrested and sentenced to long prison terms for their civil activities.
Due to the persistence of discrimination and violation of women rights in Islamic republic of Iran, there has been no improvement or amendment in the laws in Iran. Apart from the systematic gender inequalities imposed by the government, women in eastern Kurdistan and Iran have also been subjected to discrimination and violation of their basic human rights as a result of some backward traditions and customs. Sadly, dozens of women have been killed or committed suicide in the past year.
In other parts of Kurdistan, grievously, still the status of numerous Kurdish women, kidnapped by ISIS, is unknown. Many women activists and women fighters were tortured, raped and killed by the Turkish government in the occupied territories by the Turkish army such as of Afrin and Serikani.
Kurdish women, despite all the discrimination, oppression and hardships that have been inflicted on them, have been able to be at the forefront of the struggle for freedom in the region. Kurdish activist women are laboriously fighting against various sectarian and terrorist organizations such as ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations backed by Turkey and they have been remarkable in defending women’s rights, promoting peace and struggle for freedom in Kurdistan.
While congratulating once more the International Women’s Day, KMMK calls on the Kurdish community to strive for freedom and equality among all members of the community in order to create a society free from gender discrimination.
